Join us for volunteer gardening in Hollingdean
Meet Growing Hollingdean tree guardian volunteers at the Lynchet Shed at 10am on Sunday 3rd May 2026 where we will collect tools and gloves. We will adventure out into the estate to plant seeds such as chives, nasturtium, clover, bee balm, calendula, strawberry, yarrow below our trees to create small garden guilds.
Tree Guardian Mornings – First Sunday of the month, 10am to 12pm!
Help us grow our first fruit tree guilds in Hollingdean!
A fruit tree guild is a permaculture design, grouping plants around a fruit tree. These mutually beneficial plants (herbs, shrubs, flowers) create a sustainable, self-maintaining mini-ecosystem. A guild enhances soil fertility, attract pollinators, deter pests, and suppress weeds, reducing the need for human intervention. Common components include nutrient accumulators, nitrogen fixers, and attractor plants. See a short video from Pippa Chapman to explain a fruit guild.

What volunteers did on the first Sunday in April 2026
Five adult volunteers and one child met at the shed on a cold but bright Easter Sunday, 5th April 2026. We made a plan to split into small groups and walk different parts of the estate, scattering a small amount of chicken manure pellets at the base of each of the trees planted by volunteers.
Sarahjane prepared photo maps based on our tree map and shared them via WhatsApp, which helped guide each group. Everyone was given a bag of pellets, and our youngest volunteer even asked for a litter picker to take along on her walk.

If you would like to help in anyway from photographing, gardening or just surveying our trees. Please come along to one of our events and chat to our volunteers.
