Our story

Our story started in Hollingdean 2020

How Growing Hollingdean began

Growing Hollingdean began many years ago as Hollingdean Ecological Action Project, whose volunteers planted many of the fruit and nut orchards that we benefit from today. Brighton Permaculture Trust (BPT) has always supported this work, with many volunteer hours and training and expertise. With this amazing legacy and the wonderful continuing support of BPT, Growing Hollingdean developed in 2020, having its first Seed and Plant Swap in the open air, just as the pandemic lockdown was beginning. That year we encouraged people to grow food in their front gardens and share their ideas. The response was amazing.

Hollingdean Plant and Seed Swap, Community Garden Buddies and Tree Guardians

Since March 2020 we have held regular, very popular Plant and Seed Swaps out doors, planted more trees and supported more people to create community gardens and to grow food and flowers, wherever they live. Some people have become regular Tree Guardians and learnt new skills in taking care of fruit and nut trees. Now we are looking for more people to become Community Garden Buddies, helping the community gardens to thrive, and still more to help ‘wildflower’ Hollingdean’s verges and orchards.

Meet your local gardeners

More than anything we have all enjoyed ourselves so much connecting with friends, old and new, and across generations and communities. And finding local organisations who have been generous with time and resources too. We love what we do and want more people to join in. There is always room for more people and more ideas too. And it helps make Hollingdean an amazing place to live.

We look forward to seeing you at our next event.
