The Old Green Community Garden

The Old Green Community Garden, October 2025

On 73 Stanmer Street, Hollingdean, Brighton

The Old Green Community Garden is between Stanmer Villas and Stanmer Park Road. It has been developed and managed by a small group of volunteers, who meet monthly. Before the Old Green’s existence it was a strip of land owned by Highways that had become a parking strip covered in dog poo and looked sad and neglected. Over the years it has become a lovely space for the local community to enjoy.

Volunteers wanted for 2026 to help keep the garden

However in recent times the core group of volunteers has sadly diminished and there is a risk to the continuation of the garden without more volunteers. If you or you know anyone that would be happy to volunteer, please contact us on Facebook on Old Green-Hollingdean or theoldgreencommunitygarden@gmail.com

2020 the Community Built this Garden

The Old Green community have planted six fruit trees in partnership with Brighton Permaculture Trust and have added compost bins supported by Brighton & Hove Food Partnership. During lockdown they asked for help to get the rest of the garden design moving and Polly a Growing Hollingdean volunteer offered to do a design as part of her first Permaculture Diploma Design. This helped to shift it from being used as a car park / dog toilet into a thriving and much used community space.

Gardening days are 10:30am-12:30pm, usually the first Saturday of the month

Whether you’re a botanical genius or can’t tell your daisies from your dahlias, everyone is always welcome at the Old Green. If you have them, bring along some gardening gloves and tools on any of the dates below if you fancy mucking in, or you could even just come along for a slice of cake, chat, and chance to meet some lovely neighbours.

We look forward to meeting you.
