Get Growing volunteers planted a new trees at the Family Hub, February 2026

Free event in Hollingdean for all the famliy

What great fun on two productive Get Growing days in Hollingdean Park! A lovely mixed crowd of people joined in during half term including families who had booked online and some of our regular Growing Hollingdean volunteers. Two more families who happened to be in the park took part as well. The more the merrier!

Two Maribelle Cherry Plums trees added to the map (331 & 332) 2026

Two Mirabelle Cherry Plums trees are now on Hollingdean’s tree map (331 & 332)

The 10 adults and 11 children helped with planting new trees, shrubs and herbaceuous plants. They also barrowed woodchip to mulch the young trees and plants and had a go at weeding, pruning and litter picking the area.

The lunches provided in Brightlite café and by Anna the Community Chef were brilliant – great soup, bread and baked potatoes, salad, hot drinks and snacks. Loads of everything. Hilary spent time after lunch mapping out the new planting and Jo-seph stepped up the woodchip spreading. Stephan cracked on with pruning and planting.

This summer we can look after these young trees by watering them in very dry weather from our new water supplies in the Forest Garden and at our shed on Lynchet Close. If you would like to help- get in touch!

Forest Gardening

Forest Gardens have all sorts of edible plants that help each other to thrive and grow strongly- just like the layers found growing in woodland areas. Not every plant is edible though, so always check before trying them out.

Get Growing Forest Garden sessions take place on the 3rd Sunday of the month, 10-12 pm. Why not come and join in? Hollingdean’s Forest Garden is quite young and needs care and support this summer to help the newer plants get established. We share tips about how and when to harvest the plants safely and to help them grow well. You could find out more about how to grow a food forest in your own space -small or large, too. We are all learning and it is great fun. Everyone is welcome.

Meet us at Lynchet Close shed or in the Forest Garden in the park. Tools and gloves are supplied. Children and young people upto 18 are welcome with a responsible parent or guardian. Refreshments, chat and friendly welcome included!
