On Sunday 19 May 2024, Hollingdean

Sometimes one of our Growing Hollingdean volunteers will organise an extra Tree Guardian session. On Sunday morning 19 May 2024, our guardians headed to Mountfield wild flower patch behind the bus stop on The Crestway. They staked and fenced the two Walnut trees on either corner of the triangle, which was hot work in the amazing Bank Holiday sunshine.

Wild flower polka dot patch – Year Two
The wild flower patch is looking good at Mountfields. Last year volunteers created several round ‘polka dot’ beds by planting wildflower plugs and seeds onto upturned circles of turf. This gave the wildflowers a better chance to establish as the grass was discouraged from growing. This year volunteers gave the grass a trim so that it is less likely to power the delicate and tiny flowers. Plenty of lady birds, bees, spiders and hover flies were seen on the wild flower patch. We hope the birds also enjoy the other insects found in the long grass. You could make your own grassy area a wildlife haven too. The RHS say “Maximise your lawn or grassed area for wildlife. By relaxing the mowing even the most tired or unloved lawn can be brought to life. Create a flower-rich lawn, patch of long grass or mini-meadow to bring new habitat opportunities for creatures such as pollinators, grasshoppers and moth caterpillars.”
